All ready to renovate?

Adding a garage? Renovating the kitchen? Replacing your doors and windows? Or perhaps just adding a fireplace or home theater? Whatever the project, make sure you have enough coverage to include your new acquisitions. After all, you wouldn't want to see all your plans go up in smoke.

  • If you're putting in a new swimming pool for the kids, get your broker or insurer to include it in your policy. Pools are not automatically covered and must be protected with a rider.
  • Upgrading your plumbing or electrical system or reshingling your roof may actually reduce your premium.
  • It's best to consult your insurer before starting work rather than after. But there are exceptions. If your living room is struck by lightning and emergency repairs are required, don't wait to hear back from the insurance company. Your insurer will understand.
  • If you put in a wood stove in your basement, make sure it's installed according to security regulations and advise your insurer.
  • Your insurer has a right to inspect your home to check that new installations or renovations are safe. Let him in with a smile-your courtesy will be appreciated.
  • Planning to build a new house yourself, without a contractor? Calling on the generosity and skills of your family and friends to help you on your dream project? Before starting work, make sure you get construction insurance.
